The moment you monetise an essential service, which is limited due to resource restrictions- you invite trouble that you never anticipated and fuck up the entire thing.

The problem with charging the PCR test is that soon you’ll see rich people are carrying out the test in weekly basis – just to be in the safe side.

Why?

Since you have monetised the service – anyone has a right over this service as long they have the capacity to pay for the service or manage the system. You have essentially created a right which was not there.

Previously, the government was corrupt and and inefficient but equally inefficient to everyone – as perceived and in reality. Now they would be corrupt and discriminatorily inefficient – they will be just as inefficient but will be perceived to be discriminatorily inefficient towards the general people.

This often happens to be a very costly mistake for autocratic state heads like hasina.

  1. There is an excellent discussion on this phenomenon based on professional line standing service in Washington DC and in Chinese healthcare service in Micheal Shandel’s what money cant buy: the moral limits of markets.
